GIBSON BEQUEST SUB-COMMITTEE SPECIAL MEETING

‘The various plans for the new Municipal Buildings have been put up for the inspection of the public in the cast room of the Cork Municipal School of Art. They are all interesting plans, many of them very ambitious in style, and a good deal of excellent taste is displayed.
We are not at all satisfied that the plan selected is really the best of the lot. There is, however, one point about it worth noting. When the old building was pulled down it was pointed out that the valuable stone balustrade was broken up instead of being preserved for some future use. It is remarkable that the design for the new buildings has a good deal of balustrade ornament which might have been supplied by the balustrade of the old building.
All the plans make ample provision for a central hall where concerts, etc. can be held. Of course, it is impossible to say until they are carefully inspected how far any of these plans may be expected to meet the needs of the case.
It would be quite absurd to expect a really splendid building worthy of this old city to be put up for the figure at present available. It is a case of doing the best one can for the money.’
