Let’s start Monday by welcoming the newest addition to our collection, Rishabadeva Again (2010) by Janet Mullarney.
Dublin-born Mullarney is a contemporary artist based in both Ireland and Italy. Her work is influenced by extensive travels in Egypt, India, and Mexico. The artist’s subjects are ‘mined from the natural world and anthropomorphized to play out human joy and human tragedy’ (Patrick T. Murphy).
The title and form of this visually striking work derive from the upper torso of Rishabadeva (or Rishabhanatha), an important leader and spiritual teacher in the ancient religion, Jainism (Jain Dharma). It is one of three works by Mullarney that we have recently acquired. We are delighted to welcome the artist and her work into our collection!
