Michael Collins House is a history museum located in Clonakilty, County Cork that is dedicated to telling the life story of the Irish revolutionary and political leader.
Known as the “Big Fella”, Michael Collins (1890-1922) was born close by at Woodfield, Sam’s Cross. As Director of Intelligence of the Irish Republican Army, Chairman of the Provisional Government of the Irish Free State, and Commander-in-Chief of the National Army, Collins’ life and career are deeply entwined with the history of Ireland’s struggle for independence.
Presented in an accessible manner through guided tours, interactive displays, audio visuals, artefacts and more, the museum explores Collins’ story and the lives of local revolutionaries, such as Tadhg an Asna (d.1798) and Jeremiah O’Donovan Rossa (1831-1915), both of whom influenced the young Collins.
Séamus Murphy’s monumental bust of Collins and a corresponding relief portrait are both on long-term loan from Crawford Art Gallery to Michael Collins House.
Crawford Art Gallery wishes to thank Jamie Murphy and the Michael Collins House team.
