Harry Clarke, Work and Legacy: Conserving Crawford Art Gallery's Stained-Glass Panels

Wednesday 16 August, 1pm
Gallery Lecture Theatre

Guiding us through the trajectory of Clarke’s career, Stained-glass conservator Philip Crook (Vitrail Studios) will discuss the historical context, condition and conservation of the three Crawford Art Gallery stained-glass panels, explaining the development of Clarke’s techniques and the use of materials for those unfamiliar with the craft of stained glass.

Crawford Art Gallery’s three panels of stained glass by Harry Clarke (1889-1931) are rare examples of the artist’s early training and emerging originality. Following expert assessment, the three panels have been deemed to be at considerable risk. Initial cleaning and consolidation was conducted in March 2023 ahead of more sustained conservation in August 2023. Phil will be working throughout the week in the gallery and members of the public can look in at him as he works on the panels on Floor 2.

This project is supported by The Heritage Council through the Heritage Stewardship Fund.
