CAG.3057 William Sheehan, Portrait of a Lady, c.1917. Presented by her family in memory of Nuala O’Donovan (née Horgan) (1934-2017), niece of William Sheehan, 2019.
CAG.3057 William Sheehan, Portrait of a Lady, c.1917. Presented by her family in memory of Nuala O’Donovan (née Horgan) (1934-2017), niece of William Sheehan, 2019.

The meeting was specially summoned to reconsider, on reference from the General Committee, the recommendation made at last meeting extending the period of Mr. William Sheehan’s scholarship at Madrid, to 24 July and with full power to finally decide the question of the scholarship.

‘The Chairman submitted a letter which he had received from Mr. George Atkinson, Head Master, Metropolitan School of Art, Dublin, dated 5th June stating that news has reached him that Mr. Sheehan has been making use of the introductions which he (Mr Atkinson) had obtained for him to various influential persons in Madrid to cadge for money, whilst under the influence of drink, on the ground that the Gibson Bequest Committee does not allow him sufficient to live on.

Councillor Ellis moved ‘That in view of Mr William Sheehan’s failure to realise and make proper use of the opportunity which has afforded him to ensure his artistic career, the recommendation made at the meeting of this Committee on 2 June, extending the period of his scholarship at Madrid to 24 July, be and is hereby rescinded and that this scholarship be terminated at the end of the probationary period already fixed, i.e. 26 June 1923.’

On the motion of Mr. Stack a vote of thanks was passed to Mr. Hugh Charde, School of Art, for kindly repairing a statue of Venus that had been presented to the Museum, and which was slightly damaged on arrival.’
